Squash: Isle of Man performs valiantly at European championships

Five-strong team recently competed at event in Gibraltar

The Isle of Man put in some notable displays whilst competing at the recent European Squash Championships in Gibraltar.

The Manx team of Nathan Mead, Oscar Hill, Patrick Fitzpatrick, Malcolm Levy, Harvey Douglas and manager, Les Callow, managed a credible 12th place finish during the event.

A 3-1 win in their opening game against Greece was followed by a 3-1 defeat to a strong Slovakia side before a defeat by the same scoreline to Luzembourg saw them finish third in their group.

Having made they play-offs, the Isle of Man then faced Croatia with Mead, Levy and Fitzpatrick all taking their opponents a full five sets, but ultimately Croatia would emerge victorious 3-1.

The Manx team's final match of the competition saw them face Greece again for the 11th-12th place play-off, and despite beating Greece in their opening game, the Isle of Man were without no.2 player Oscar Hill who had to return home due to work commitments.

After an intense schedule of four games in two days beforehand, tiredness then became a factor in this final outing with Greece going on to eventually take the win.

The Isle of Man's 12th place standing at the end of the tournament saw them finish ahead of other Island nations such as Gibraltar and Guernsey.
