Snooker: Rockets back on top after big victory

Top trio separated by three points

Report by Mike Crook:

The 5-0 results keep coming in the Manx Car Store Snooker League, this week it was the turn of Finch Hill Rockets to produce a table topping performance. Elsewhere, John Kennish of Musicians ‘A’ made the highest break of 66, plus a 40 and 22 clearance, his only scoring visits in a quality display.

Finch Hill Rockets 5-0 The Miscues

Report by Graham Ashton:

Graham Ashton 61-35 Ben Peach - Graham eventually retrieved Ben’s 21 start to get level with one red left. This red stayed up for 15 minutes, good snookers from Graham giving him the crucial advantage. Leon Martin 65-16 Reiner Naylor - Amazing start by Leon, superb potting for a 22 break and dominated the frame. Paddy Delaney 94-66 Luca McDermott - Paddy scored well with several teen breaks to recover the 49 point deficit and Luca struggling to keep his opponent out of the balls. Marc Bolton 35-26 Ollie Pickford - A very slow frame with one of the lowest winning scores you’re ever likely to see. A good final blue from Marc was decisive. Doug Kinrade 70-60 Rob Dolby - A 23 break from Doug was just enough for a Rockets clean sweep, a great result, they go back to the top as previous leaders Cue Zone Blinders had a bye.

Port St Mary Legion 2-3 Finch Hill Musicians B

Report by Terry Boyle:

Marc Morley 18-52  Matt Dodd - Marc was under the weather but battled bravely, however Matt was potting well for the win. Phil Joynes 52-64 Dave Hanlon - Phil started strongly but on a break of 17 he left a black over the pocket with good position. From there Dave gained in confidence, on to the colours Phil was still slightly ahead before Dave got blue and pink for the frame. Andrew Hutchison 45-36 Pat Maher - Good battle, both players potting well and Andy just ahead with three colours left. Pat got a good blue and pink before Andy, going for a double on the black tripled it! Dave Pickersgill 68-58 Paul Tangeman - Another tight frame and good play from both players. Dave managed to get the start back going on to the colours and a bit of cat and mouse down to the black which Dave managed to pot. Terry Boyle 54-63 Vic Rigby - Vic got to 30 ahead without playing at his best. I battled back to make it a black ball frame which Vic tripled for the win. I was gutted, but on reflection Vic made fewer mistakes so deserved the win. A game played in good spirits and Hanlon’s boys just about deserved the victory.

Finch Hill Musicians A 4-1 Snooker Bar-Barians

Report by John Kennish:

Peter Collister 101-59 Chris Lawless - Peter did well to make inroads into the 42 start with a good 28 break. Chris was unable to settle and was not really given many clear cut chances. Solid potting from Peter led to what was a fairly comfortable victory. Sean Rolt 46-80 Chris Reynolds - Always a tricky task for Sean giving Chris a 56 start. The task was not helped with the black ending up on the green cushion and the blue in the middle of the reds. Chris maintained a comfortable lead but towards the end of the frame conceded a few fouls which meant that Sean was able to win with the green left. It was never going to be a straightforward clearance though as the pink was on the yellow cushion. Sean however missed a mid range brown. Chris made no mistake and then fluked the blue to effectively seal the frame. Simon Gardner 43-35 Paul Craine - Simon played well to build up a 20 point advantage, however a few flukes and good pots meant that Paul closed the gap going into the colours. Paul left the blue over the pocket, but the pot was a thinnish snip for Simon which he played brilliantly, sending the cue ball around three cushions to finish perfectly on the pink which was under the black spot. Far from straightforward, Simon held his nerve to clinch the frame. Vinny Dale 42-7 Andy Moore - Solid snooker from Dale who played very well to limit any opportunities for Andy to score. Andy was able to take a number of reds but was unable to capitalise with any colours. Classic score and hide from Dale who is now five out of five in the league. John Kennish 128-87 Mark Davenport - Mark started the frame 84 ahead, but John recovered nearly half of this with a 40 break. After his next visit to the table John was ahead after a 66 break, missing a double on the green to extend it further. After a few exchanges on the green, Mark got on the scoreboard with a nice pot. Mark put John into a tricky snooker, but after a solid connection from the snooker, John was fortunate to see the brown go into the middle and then took the frame with a 22 clearance.

St Olaves 2-3 Finch Hill Mob

Paul Smyth 96-63 William Hogg - Nearly two frames had been completed on the second table being used for the match by the time this finished. An evening young Hogg will want to forget, starting 63 up he was completely blanked by Smyth who eventually struck breaks of 31 and 25. Dave Kelly 111-48  Peter Kirkham - Kirkham, starting 56 behind missed three early blacks and with Kelly potting nice small breaks he raced away. A last chance came for Kirkham at 80 behind, needing the lot to win. A great break of 39 followed which ended surprisingly on an easy looking pink off the penultimate red. With the pressure off, Kelly cleared to the black for 26 and at long last register his first 20+ break in the league. Mike Crook 43-51 Lee Hunt - An early 20 break from Hunt but Crook was just ahead on the blue. Without an obvious safety shot Crook took it on, missed, and Hunt took blue and pink. Dan Crawley 53-63 Steve Finnegan - Crawley opened with a 32 break, all blacks and always looked the winner despite flashes from Finn. Crawley was left an easy tap in blue to middle for frame but confidently played for pink as well to put it beyond doubt. Coming off one cushion, his white snicked the pink and trickled into the opposite middle bag, Finn cleared! Geoff Hall 52-67 Paul Smith - A low quality affair, both missed numerous efforts at the final pink before Smith unsurprisingly fluked it off two cushions. St Olave’s were left wondering how they lost.

The Hurricanes 2-3 DSB Wannabes

A rare win for Wannabes in this derby encounter which takes them off the bottom of the table to be replaced by the Snooker Bar-barians. Aided by starts of 63 and 91, Callister and Cowin were never threatened and Dave Corris made it 3-0. Hurricanes at least salvaged a couple of points by taking the last two frames, the finale on the black. Frame scores: Jamie Wilson 47-95 David Calister, Ste MacDonald 33-106 Steve Cowin, Nialls Wilson 42-58 Dave Corris, Lee Butterworth 77-64 Paul McKinstry and Steve Munk 67-66 Michael Creer.

Malew 1-4 Cue Zone Masters

Report by Alec Oates:

James Goodwin  41-63 Ivan McMaw - Another frame where Jimmy failed to capitalise on his start. He gave away too many penalty points and couldn't get a colour with any of six reds potted. Ivan deserved the win with some great play. Mark Quinn 41-67 Jez Hill - Jez played just a little better than Mark. Jez managed to go in-off the final blue leaving only a handful of points in it but. Mark couldn't take advantage, Jez took the blue and pink for the frame and extend Postie’s woes. Tony Pring  28-59 Brendan Clague - I think both players would agree this frame was not a great display of potting! Brendan just about edged it and when making the blue Tony threw in the towel. Tony Cubbon 64-29 Les Briggs - The best frame of the night at least as far as Malew were concerned. Tony had a break of 21 and went on to dominate the game, not giving Les many chances and admitted defeat on the blue. Alec Oates 30-39 Martin Rigg - Not a high scoring frame with neither player willing to give much away. Alec was a couple of points ahead on the pink. He tried to put the pink onto the baulk cushion, but only just reached the baulk line. Despite making an error of judgement he thought the pink was fairly safe. Martin had no thoughts of safety as he cut the pink into the green pocket. The black was just off the black cushion, about 40cm from a pocket. The cueball landed in a position where you say to yourself do I go for the pot or play safe? Martin was not in a play safe mood as he potted the black for the win! The third 4-1 loss on the trot for Malew and with no match next week they are almost certain to slip further down the league.
