Rugby round-up as Ramsey romp to victory

Vagas slip to defeat at Newton le Willows

Douglas downed at Penrith

Douglas returned empty-handed from the long trip to Penrith, where they were beaten 31-18. Sam Mete and Carl Markl-Ferns both went in for Douglas tries with Bryn Snellgrove converting one and adding two penalties. Good news for Douglas was that close rivals Birkenhead Park lost away at Blackburn, which means Douglas remain in third place in North One West. The two teams meet each other next week at Birkenhead Park.

Bonwick hat trick as Ramsey canter past Parkonians

Top against bottom was only going to end one way, as Ramsey eased past old friends and rivals Oxton Parkonians 72-5 at the Mooragh. Credit to Parkonians for making a fist of it and getting across the whitewash at the other end. Dan Richmond, on his first start at scrum-half, opened the scoring, and with further tries from Mikey Craine, Eddie Lord, John F Watling and Dan Bonwick, plus three conversions from Fintan Cummins, Ramsey led 36-0 at the break. In the second half Bonwick completed his hat-trick, Craine added his second, and there were first tries for Harry Parsons and Connor Goodall. Jarred Callister rounded the day off for Ramsey, with Cummins adding three more conversions.

Vagabonds slip at Newton le Willows

Vagas had high hopes of an away win at Newton, but had to settle for a losing bonus point as they were beaten 24-19. Bryn Griffith, Matty Williams and Chris Bass all went in for tries, with Tom Rowley converting two out of three. With none of the other clubs playing Vagas remain in 6th place, but their hopes of a finish in the promotion places have faded. They can no longer catch the leaders and are ten points adrift of second place, while teams above them have two games in hand.

Vagas Ladies beat Carlisle

It was a tense, low-scoring affair at Ballafletcher but Vagas held on to win 12-7, inflicting just a third defeat of the season on Carlisle in the process. Mid-way through the first half the highly experienced Fran Hunt crashed in to open the scoring, and Lauren Ellison’s conversion give them a 7-0 half-time lead. In the dying minutes Kathryn Craine poached yet another try to make it 12-0. Hannah Farrell intercepted for Carlisle to gives Vagas a late scare, but by the time she’d converted her own try time was up.

Emerging Nomads beat Vikings in Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield

Ethan McNaught bagged two for Emerging Nomads as they beat Western Vikings 27-14 in the Manx Shield. Also on target for Nomads were Rob Keelan, Josh Smith and Orry Watterson, with Max Lewthwaite converting one. Vikings replied with tries from Ed Knight and Tom Brummitm, with Mark Venables adding two conversions.

Douglas Celts kept in touch with the leaders with a 72-5 defeat of Ramsey B. Charlie Henthorn and Alex Long both ran in two for the Celts, with other scores coming from Ralph Clark, Conor Stephens, Phil Plaatjies, Sean Garland, Harrison Kirk, Ciaran Sherrard, Harrison Kirk and Rob Todd. Alex Long converted one and Conor Stephens converted five. Reece Noden picked up a consolation try for Ramsey.
