Ray Gawne gave almost 60 years' service at Billown

A farmer in the south of the Island who's marshalled on the Billown Course for almost 60 years is packing up his flags.

Ray Gawne began marshalling in 1961, eventually taking over the flag position at Ballabeg vacated by Alan Costain in the early '80s.

Mr Gawne had been due to retire in 2017 but was persuaded to stay on for another couple of years with the help of his son Steve Gawne, who's the chief sector marshal at Ballabeg, meaning he completed 58 years' service last year.

He only missed one session in that entire time, when work on his busy family farm kept him away.

Southern 100 racing is wishing him a well-earned rest from standing out on the course in all weathers, but are sure they will still see him around.

Mr Gawne is their Marshals Association president and is also Captain of the Parish of Arbory.
