Laxey and St Mary's to contest Junior Cup Final

Mead the hero for Laxey

Danny Mead was the hero as Laxey booked their place in the final of the Ascot Hotel Junior Cup on Saturday.

The Miners’ goalkeeper saved three penalties and then scored from the spot himself as Laxey knocked out Combination One champions Old Boys in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

After a goalless 90 minutes, Mikey Booth’s penalty three minutes into extra-time put Old Boys ahead before George Burrows hit a superb leveller two minutes into the second period.

The match went to spot-kicks and both Mead and fellow goalkeeper John Ward saved two apiece as the shoot-out went to sudden death but Ward then saw his own penalty saved by Mead as jubilant Laxey triumphed 9-8.

Laxey will play St Mary’s in the final after St Mary’s were too strong for St John’s.

Two goals from talented teenager Joe Berquist and one each from Josh Molyneux and Jay Corrin secured a 4-0 win for the Saints at Mullen-e-Cloie.
