Kaneen and George win at NSC

The Isle of Man Veteran Athletes' Club's 20 and 10 kilometre walks took place on Sunday in damp but warm conditions around the NSC Perimeter Road.

Race sponsor Peter Kaneen (pictured) of Union Mills Garage opted to compete in the 10km walk this year and despite missing the start of the race the Manx Harrier stormed through to victory in a time of 50 minutes 15 seconds.

Douglas Hotelier Dave Mackey took second spot in 61.50 but was a little disappointed with his time, possibly due to the lingering effects of his Parish Walk success in June.

Third place went to Richard Wild, who was delighted with an improvement in his time over the distance.

The first and only lady competitor was Sarah Goldsmith of the host club, who finished fourth overall.

The 20km race saw just nine competitors line up with five non-starters on the day.

Michael George took the lead from the start and went on to win in a time of 1 hour 45 minutes 15 seconds.

IOMVAC’s Vinny Lynch took second place in a personal best time of 1:59.01, pulling away from clubmate Simon Cox at around half distance with Cox holding onto third spot in a time of 2:03.14.

Michael Shipsides and Ian Callister fought a close battle for just over half the distance with Michael winning through to take fourth place.

Newcomer David Anderson and Alan Gault kept each other company throughout the 25 laps with Gault just pipping Anderson to the line.

Again only one lady competitor in this event, double-lap Parish Walker Bethany Clague, who finished fifth overall in a time of 2:18.55.

A big thank you to the army of volunteers who turned out to help with officiating, marshalling and drinks.

The IOMVAC would like to thank Union Mills Garage for their sponsorship and Manx Harriers for the use of their clubhouse.

The next IOMVAC walking event is the White and Health End to End Walk on 21st September.
