Jiu-jitsu: Island fighters secure five medals in New York

Success for Hayley Curtis & Alan Greenhalgh in USA

Two Isle of Man jiu-jitsu competitors have claimed five medals between them whilst competing out in the USA.

Hayley Curtis and Alan Greenhalgh of Summit Grappling Academy - formerly known as Gracie Barra - contested the IBJJF New York Jiu-Jitsu Open held last weekend (3-4 August).

Senior squad member Curtis would go on to claim four medals personally - three gold and one silver - taking top spots in the featherweight gi division final as well as the two nogi finals she was involved in.

Her silver came in the gi open weight class as she earned a points win in her semi-final.

Meanwhile, junior competitor Greenhalgh impressed as he secured victory within two minutes of his final in the middleweight gi division to also secure gold.

Summit Grappling Academy Head Coach, Conrad Roberts is describing the trip for the club as 'incredibly successful' adding 'the wins show that the Isle of Man very much still deserves to be there at the international level.'

Looking ahead, Curtis' next event is expected to be the IBJJF European Nogi Championships in Rome, Italy from 17-20 October.

Elsewhere - having already gained international experience so far this year - Greenhalgh is currently due to be involved in the IBJJF Kids European Championships in Lisbon, Portugal from 26-27 October.
