Gold-en Manx end Games on a high

The curtain has come down on the 13th NatWest Island Games in Aland.

The Island finished second overall in the medals table with a tally of 29 golds, 30 silvers and 29 bronze.

And the final day didn’t disappoint either as the women’s football team finally ended their long wait for a medal as they claimed bronze with a 3-1 victory over the Isle of Wight.

It's the first time the Manx ladies have won a medal, having lost two bronze play-offs in the past.

The scorers were Eleanor Gawne, skipper Gill Christian and Jade Burden.

There was joy for Ramsey golfer Davy Jones as he claimed silver in the men’s singles tournament, while Paul Lowey narrowly missed out on a bronze in fourth place.

Those results helped the men's team - Jon Corke, Kevin Moore, Lowey and Jones - win silver in the team competition.

In badminton, defeated semi-finalists Kimberley Clague and Kristen Callow were awarded bronze in the women's singles and Matthew Wilkinson and Neil Harding teamed up to achieve the same in the men’s doubles.

The women’s basketball side missed out on a bronze medal after a 100-26 defeat to Gibraltar, while archer Allan George finished sixth in the final of the single FITA Men's Compound.

A wet closing ceremony was the final act in a successful 13th NatWest Island Games.

The Manx team are due back at Ronaldsway at two thirty this afternoon (Sunday).
