Officials confirm switch from road race format from 2026

Gran Fondo Isle of Man - one of the Island's major cycling events - will switch to become a gravel bike and mountain bike race in 2026.

Officials say it will be a 'mass-participation' event in which competitors take on a 90km course, starting in the north of the Island and finishing in the south in Castletown on Sunday, 26 July next year.

In December last year, it was announced that 2025 will be the last year that Gran Fondo runs solely as a road cycling festival which it has done since its inception.

Furthermore, organisers add this new format will be 'inclusive and accessible, welcoming riders of all ages and abilities' with different rides over different distances.

The 90km Gran Fondo race will have separate classes for gravel bike and XC MTB bikes respectively.

It's said the route for that race will involve 'a range of gravel roads, single track, bridle-paths, tarmac and private land.'

Meanwhile, a shorter 40km Medio Fondo will take place at the same time for any type of bike - including e-bikes - under sportive conditions.

Outside of the main two events on Sunday, 26 July there will also be two social riding events held on that same weekend.

On Saturday, 25 July will be the Piccolo Fondo which will run as a 'guided social ride' whilst on the morning of Sunday, 26 July will be the family-friendly Minisculo Fondo which will be held in Castletown.

Both the Piccolo Fondo and Minisculo Fondo will be open to all types of bike.

Director of Gran Fondo (Isle of Man) Ltd., Paul Phillips says: "When we decided to conclude Gran Fondo Isle of Man, we wanted to keep the team together and deliver another top-tier event for the Island. Gravel cycling is experiencing rapid growth, and it felt like the ideal time to apply our expertise to a new project.

"We’re excited about the plans we have in the works and can’t wait to share them with the riders who have supported us over the years – and hopefully attract new faces who prefer off-road cycling.

"We’re also delighted to partner with Castletown, and look forward to complementing its already impressive event portfolio. The backdrop of Castle Rushen for the finish will make for an unforgettable experience."
