Contests set to take place in all 15 constituencies

The final line-up of candidates for next month's Isle of Man general election will be known shortly after 2pm today (Tuesday, August 30).

It's nomination day, when everybody hoping to win a seat in the House of Keys must hand over the papers formalising their involvement.

The 15 returning officers will receive the papers from the candidates for three hours up to 1pm, after which there will be a further period of 60 minutes, during which any objections can be made.

Barring any last minute additions to the line-up, which are always possible, 64 candidates will contest the 24 seats, with contests in all 15 constituencies for the first time in at least quarter of a century.

Five years ago there were 55 candidates, with 50 in 2001, 52 in 1996, 73 in 1991 and 74 in 1986, the year the ministerial system of government came in.

In the past 25 years, the most candidates for a single seat was nine in Peel in 1986. The most for both two and three seat constituencies was eleven, in North Douglas in 1991 and Rushen, again in 1986.

The most candidates in a constituency this time is six, in Castletown, East Douglas, Onchan and Ramsey, with five in Peel and Rushen.

Polling day is Thursday, September 29.
