Charity the winner in annual rugby match

The annual front row challenge raised £500 for the Isle of Man branch of children’s rugby charity Wooden Spoon on New Year’s Eve.

In what was the 10th running of the event, the team of front row forwards was assembled by front row veteran Jim Nicholson and was made up of players representing the different clubs in the Isle of Man - Douglas, Ramsey, Castletown, Vagabonds and Southern Nomads.

The opposition was a team of all comers but mainly younger players from Ramsey Rugby Club who hosted the event.

The youngsters won 25-15 with Matt Cheeseman and Zach Claydon both touching down.

Will Wren was on target for the front row team.

Jim, 50, took part in the game and made up an all-Nicholson front row. His son Rory packed down at loosehead while brother Paul hooked.

A father and son combination took the field for Ramsey too with Tommy Callister and son Jared both taking part.

Local Wooden Spoon chairman Peter Saunders thanked everyone for their efforts and confirmed the funds would go to the recently formed Wheelchair Rugby Club.
