Athletics: Top three for Sarah Astin in Telford

Loundes sets new Manx record and Atherton finishes second in class

Isle of Man endurance athlete Sarah Astin has taken a top-three finish at this year's Telford 10k.

As one of several Manx competitors involved in the meeting, Astin - competing for her club Belgrave Harriers - claimed second in the women's race with a time of 32 minutes and 42 seconds.

She would finish only eight seconds behind women's race winner Amelia Quirk of Bracknell AC (32 minutes and 34 seconds) with Dundee Hawkhill runner Natasha Phillips finishing third in the women's class overall and winning the female Under-20 category (32 minutes and 56 seconds).

There were also impressive performances elsewhere in the field from fellow Island athletes Mike Loundes and Dawn Atherton.

Loundes won the Men's 75-79 class by more than nine minutes and set a new Isle of Man 75 record, clocking 45 minutes and 39 seconds.

Meanwhile, Atherton managed to break the 40-minute barrier to finish second Women's 40-44 section.

Her time of 39 minutes and 22 seconds was only bettered in that class by Lisa Gawthorne of Vegan Runners who managed 37 minutes and eight seconds; rounding out the top three in that class and finishing just behind Atherton was Lora Glann of Altrincham And District Athletic Club (39 minutes and 24 seconds).
