A ‘Lean’ time for Castletown

Southern Nomads skipper Andy Lean bagged a first half hat-trick as his side exploded into the Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield with a 53-3 win over near neighbours Castletown.

Lean’s hat trick was backed up by two first half tries from James Hammal and a further score from Martin Thompson. Three conversions from Al Corrin made it 36-0 at the break.

Castletown pulled themselves together in the second half and while they were never organised enough to prevent Nomads from scoring again, they did put up some spirited resistance before Nomads pulled further ahead with tries from Martin Thompson, Damien Brand and Ross McCulloch.

Castletown had the final say however with a Sam Peel penalty to give them a small measure of respectability.

Elsewhere in the Shield, Vagabonds B beat Emerging Nomads 22-14 in a surprisingly tight game at Glencrutchery Road.

Lee McIvor, Daryn Thompson, Joe Louw and Matt Rockwell all picked up tries for Vagas with Michael Oates adding a conversion.

Promising youngster Sam Looker and slightly older Dave Edge crossed for Nomads with Edge also picking up two conversions.

At Mooragh Park, Ramsey B beat Douglas B 15-7 in another tight game.

Tom Howarth’s first half try converted by Mike Ebden gave Douglas a 7-5 half-time lead after Chris Penketh had put Ramsey ahead.

In the second half though the northerners took the points with tries from Chris King and Chris Kneale.
