Young offenders to be offered placements


More young offenders are to be offered community service orders in future as an alternative to custody.

Community-based punishments are being extended, thanks to a joined-up approach by social services, the probation service and local authorities.

And while projects like clearing gardens and decorating will continue, some youths will be given placements within social services.

It's to increase their awareness of people with social needs, such as disabilities and mental health problems, and to prepare them for paid employment in future.

Director of social services Andrew Swithinbank says extending the range of options is proving a success:
