Working group to assess need for Sarah's Law

The government says it's going to look again at Sarah's Law for the Isle of Man.

Home Affairs Minister Adrian Earnshaw has announced a new working group's been set up, to consider whether the law would improve child protection here.

Sarah's Law allows members of the public to find out if convicted paedophiles live in their local area.

It marks a change in tack for the department, which in the past has said current laws are sufficient to protect children.

The group is made up of representatives from the campaign for Sarah's law, Victim Support, representatives from the prison and probation services and the police.

It met for the first time this week under the chairmanship of Home Affairs department member Bill Malarkey.

Minister Earnshaw says he's been impressed by campaigners who presented a petition calling for the introduction of Sarah's Law in the Island, to the July Tynwald.

At the time Mr Earnshaw said he regarded the law as it was on the Island as 'good enough’ to protect children from sex offenders.

He now says the review the working group will carry out is 'imperative'.

Mr Earnshaw is one of six candidates standing in Onchan in next week's General Election.

The others are Peter Karran, David Quirk, Zac Hall, June Kelly and Brian Stowell.
