Women urged to use screening service

Seventy per cent of women on the Island in the 50 to 70 age group now attend appointments for breast screening.

Numbers shot up after a call and recall system was introduced more than three years ago.

Instead of requesting breast screening, women are now called automatically through GP lists.

The tracking system led to many more cases of the disease being diagnosed, and because cancers are being caught early, survival rates are good.

The screening centre in Douglas uses a full-field digital machine, giving images of a quality available at only one in five hospitals in the United Kingdom.

Superintendant radiographer Hilary Miller is urging all women in the target group to take advantage (listen to audio file below):

Women with questions or concerns should see their GP, or call 642 570.
