Views wanted on local government modernisation

Efforts to improve transparency

Do you want to have a say on the modernisation of local government in the Isle of Man?

If so, the Department of Infrastructure wants to hear from you.

It’s launched a consultation on proposals to improve the delivery of local services, and increase transparency within local authorities.

The survey was triggered by recommendations from a Tynwald Select Committee.

They include a requirement for members of local authorities to declare any interests that could potentially influence how they carry out their duties.

Under the proposals, a register of interests would be available for public inspection, and 'greater clarity' for members’ expenses and allowances.

Uncertainties over qualifications for election and holding office as a member of a local authority would be resolved.

DOI Minister Ray Harmer hopes the eventual changes to legislation will help people become more engaged with local politics and the decisions.

Submissions can be emailed to LocalGovernment@gov.im or sent to Ian Brooks at the department, at the Sea Terminal in Douglas.

Information is also available on the government's consultation hub.
