Union leader underlines concerns over work permit exemptions

Claims move not good for economic growth

Unite the Union has underlined its concerns to work permit exemptions for seasonal workers in the hospitality trade.

The move was introduced at the beginning of this month, with the idea of helping employers within the industry find enough workers to fill positions during the busy summer season.

Companies must pre-register for exemptions and only employ people from the European Economic Area until the end of October.

All those employed must have at least 12 months relevant experience in the sector.

Whilst welcomed by the industry, Regional Organiser for Unite on the Island, Eric Holmes, says he doesn't agree with claims that the move is good for economic growth.
