Union boss queries permit reform support

Unite head reviews DED's conclusions

The Island's trade union figurehead has questioned support shown for work permit reforms in a recent consultation.

The Department of Economic Development says there was 'strong support' from the Manx public and industry, for proposals to make it easier for non Island residents to obtain a work permit.

But the President of the Isle of Man Trades Union Council has questioned claims that three-quarters of the responses were in favour. 

DED minister Laurence Skelly will table a set of seven key reforms, simplifying the application system, for Tynwald approval this month.

Eric Holmes argues his response on behalf of the TUC represented 10 to 12 trade unions, but is only classed as one submission.

And he thinks public opinion may in fact have been much more mixed:
