Tynwald to consider new Sea Services Agreement

Replacement vessels and improved passenger facilities

A replacement for the Ben-my-Chree by December 2021 and refurbished passenger facilities at Heysham by the end of the year.

Those are some of the details set out in a document designed to form the basis of a new Sea Services Agreement.

The Heads of Terms of the agreement will be considered at this month's sitting of Tynwald.

The proposals include replacing both current vessels, with the Manannan scheduled for a £250,000 refit in 2021 before replacement in 2026.

The Ben-my-Chree would be kept to provide back-up after it's replaced in 2021.

The document also states that foot passenger fares would be frozen until the Ben's replacement enters service, while the Steam Packet will fund the improvement of facilities in Heysham.

If approved, the 25-year agreement would be signed in May and come into force in January next year, replacing the existing User Agreement.
