Tynwald supports developing energy resources in Manx waters

Tynwald has supported the principle of developing energy in the Isle of Man's territorial waters.

This could mean offshore wind, marine renewables or hydrocarbon energy sources.

During the debate, the move was described by Rushen MHK Lawrence Skelly as an example of green and economic strategies coming together.

But concern was raised by Alex Downie MLC who suggested windfarm plans in Britain were in fact being scrapped and we should be looking in more detail at other areas.

Environment Minister Phil Gawne said they already had 12 companies showing interest in developing wind farms . .  . but stressed that today was about supporting the principle, and detailed proposals would come back to Tynwald as appropriate.

In summing up, Mr Gawne said there could be huge benefits for the Island.

In the end only one member, West Douglas MHK Chris Thomas, opposed the motion.
