Tynwald asked to approve CoMin plans to address migration

Proposals include incentives and disincentives

Tynwald is being asked to approve government proposals aimed at incentivising and disincentivising inward migration to the Isle of Man.

The report outlines both short-term and long-term actions to attract workers and address population challenges.

Key incentives include national insurance rebates, relocation grants, and student loan forgiveness for certain graduates.

Disincentives being considered are healthcare surcharges for immigrants and potential charges for economically inactive individuals moving to the Island.

The Council of Ministers highlights concerns over an ageing population, negative natural population growth, and increased demand for public services, stressing the urgent need for inward migration.

Despite the Department for Enterprise setting out plans to suspend the work permit system temporarily, but this report now states the system will remain in place as it is a "key migration tool and route for information collection".

However, gaps in data are noted as a significant obstacle to fully understanding migration trends to and from the Isle of Man.

The Island Plan sets out an ambition to increase the Island's population to 100,000 by 2037 as part of efforts to increase the working population.

The report in full can be seen HERE.
