Two-year ban for drink-driver who crashed into taxi

Douglas man admitted drinking on a night out before driving friends home

A Douglas man who crashed his car into the back of a taxi after drinking while on a night out with friends has been banned from driving for two years.

Arron George Ramsay of Anagh Coar Close pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with excess alcohol.

He'd been drinking in Douglas on 21 December before driving some of his friends home in the early hours of the following day.

At around 1am, the 20-year-old was driving along Quarterbridge Road when he crashed into the back of a taxi, causing substantial damage.

After failing a roadside breath test, a further sample provided at Police Headquarters gave a reading of 69 - the legal limit is 35.

The prosecution told the court Ramsay estimated he'd consumed two pints and a shot, possibly more.

Ramsay's advocate highlighted that no-one had been harmed in the incident, and handed over a letter of apology from her client to the taxi driver.

Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood fined Ramsay £1,400 and disqualified him from the road for two years.

He'll also have to pay £125 in prosecution costs and take an extended driving test at the end of his ban.
