Hoard features mix of Middle Ages coins

The discovery of 10th Century silver coins under Manx soil has strengthened historians' knowledge of historic Manx currency.

Metal detectorist Kath Giles unearthed 100 pieces of silver from the Middle Ages including 87 coins in April.

The find was officially declared treasure this week.

Dr Kristin Bornholdt-Collins, a USA-based currency expert, has confirmed some of the money was minted in the Isle of Man, as well as England, Ireland and Germany.

Alison Fox from Manx National Heritage says the find may indicate how the Isle of Man's status grew throughout the Viking era:
