Tragic death leads to new licensing system

The Department of Transport is to bring in new licences for heavy goods vehicles in the Isle of Man.

It follows a thorough consultation and comes after the tragic death of a young cyclist in the Island two years ago.

The system will be introduced in the next two years.

John Quaye from Manx Independent Carriers, one of the Island's leading haulage companies, is happy with the government's proposals.

He told Manx Radio:

"Whilst it doesn't exactly mirror UK and European legislation, I think it's been quite well thought out, especially with the consultation with the people who it's going to affect, i.e. the hauliers.

"I think it's been thought through quite well, and hopefully it should meet the requirement that are necessary."
