'Too many unanswered questions' around RSE investigation say MHKs

Second stage of report into sex education still not published

The Department of Education, Sport and Culture has been criticised for a lack of ‘transparency’ around an ongoing review into the teaching of sex education in Island secondary schools.

Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK’s Jason Moorhouse and Tim Glover say there are ‘too many unanswered questions’ about the second phase of the probe.

Independent external investigators were brought in to conduct the review after allegations about the way the curriculum was being rolled out at QEII High School.

The first report which looked into the events of a 'drop-down day' at the Peel school, held in September 2022, was published in March.

In the last sitting of Tynwald before the summer recess education, sport and culture minister told politicians the second report was due to be completed by the end of the summer term.

Julie Edge gave a date of 21 July and said once received the department would then consider phase three.

At the time she said it was important the review was ‘thorough’:

However Mr Moorhouse and Mr Glover have told Manx Radio that date has slipped and they’ve still not seen the report.

Manx Radio has asked the DESC to confirm when the second report will be published – we are waiting for a response.
