'Time isn't right' to remove prayers from House of Keys

MHKs set to debate the tradition in today's sitting

An MHK who plans to vote against proposals to remove prayers from House of Keys sittings says he doesn't understand how some of his colleagues find the act so difficult.

Onchan member Rob Callister says the tradition is an important part of sittings, with more than half of the Island's population identifying as Christian in last year's census.

There are Christian elements in a number of other political settings, including the Tynwald Day ceremony and National Service of Remembrance.

Mr Callister doesn't believe the time is right to cut out these traditions:

Meanwhile, Douglas East MHK and Manx Labour Party Leader, Joney Faragher says dropping prayers would be just about 'improving inclusivity'.
