Two MBEs and one BEM for Manx residents
Three people from the Isle of Man have been recognised in His Majesty The King’s Birthday Honours List.
David McLean and Captain Stuart McKenzie has been awarded MBEs and Wendy McDowell has been awarded a BEM.
MBE stands for Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire and is the rank fifth in the level of seniority.
Mr Mclean has been awarded his honour for the promotion of arts, culture and music on the Island.
The keen musician encouraged his local community to purchase the old Methodist Centenary Hall – transforming it, under his leadership, into the Peel Centenary Centre.
Captain McKenzie collects his honour for his outstanding contribution to the Manx community.
Following a successful career in the Merchant Navy he became a founder member of the Ramsey Queen’s Pier Restoration Trust – becoming chairman in 2018.
In his role as project manager he became the driving force behind the planned restoration as it progressed from planning to the survey and construction phases.
BEM stands for British Empire Medal and is awarded for ‘hands-on’ service to the local community, a long-term charitable or voluntary activity or innovative work of a relatively short duration.
Mrs McDowell has been awarded the BEM for her outstanding contribution to music and drama on the Island.
She’s been an active member of local drama and musical societies, choirs and festivals since the 1960s.
Most notably she has contributed to the Manx Music Festival as a competitor, teacher, accompanist and committee member.
