64-year-old pleads guilty to two accusations
A Douglas man’s been sent to prison after racking up three breaches of Coronavirus regulations.
Sixty-four-year-old Peter Francis Shields, of Kensington Road, appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas Courthouse through a video link from prison.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to comply with the Island’s Covid-19 laws in April - the court heard he’d committed his first breach last September.
Prosecution advocate Hazel Carroon told the hearing Shields arrived at the Sea Terminal on 7 April and spoke to officials who told him he had to self-isolate for three weeks.
Shields said he understood the rules and, although he lived alone, had enough support to observe the isolation period.
But on 10 April police were called after he went to Newsbeat on Bucks Road in Douglas to buy a newspaper and food.
Officers arrested him but on 15 April, while he was on bail, he went to the same shop – where staff reused to serve him and he was again arrested when he returned home.
Mrs Hughes said the court was unapologetic for handing harsh sentences to those who broke the rules saying his actions had risked the health of everybody on the Island.
After hearing of his previous Coronavirus conviction she jailed Shields for a total of 14 weeks.
