Theresa May pledges Island inclusion in Brexit talks

Letter written to chief minister

Crown Dependencies will be allowed to contribute to Brexit negotiations, according to Downing Street.

It follows a letter sent by British Prime Minister Theresa May to Chief Minister Allan Bell.

The document says the rights of EU nationals living on the Island will be protected.

The outcome of the EU referendum sent shockwaves through British politics, when 52% of the 17 million people who voted chose to leave the union last month.

Despite the wholesale changes the result has brought about - Mrs May has reassured the Manx government the vote doesn't change the constitutional relationship between the UK and the Isle of Man.

Britain's new PM acknowledged the Bell administration favours the current arrangements being continued as far as possible - and says regular communication between our two jurisdictions will be 'essential' in Brexit talks.

Mrs May told the outgoing chief minister Manx interests will be taken into account in any discussions that take place.

She said the Isle of Man [and other Crown Dependencies] will be kept informed and have the chance for input when appropriate.
