Tern! Tern! Tern!

Nesting birds return to north of IoM

There's a warning to be careful when out walking on the northern coast of the Isle of Man

The annual arrival of Arctic, Little and Common Terns has now started at the Point of Ayre.

Their eggs can easily be mistaken for stones, so are at risk of being stood on accidentally.

Areas where they are nesting are being roped off, with signs alerting you to the birds' presence.

Police say there are currently two areas at the Point of Ayre and two at Smeale where the terns are nesting, with the likelihood of further spots being roped off as and when others arrive.

Anyone walking their dog around there should keep their dogs on leads and under control at all times.

There's a reminder it's an offence to cause any disturbance to these birds, their young or their nests.

You're also advised there are many other ground nesting birds such as Lapwings, Oystercatchers and Ringed Plovers in these areas, which are equally at risk.
