Teenager fined for being drunk in public place

Douglas man ordered to pay £100 fine

An unemployed Douglas teenager who grinned at magistrates as he was sentenced has been told his crimes are in no way amusing.

Nathan Owen Briggs of Castlemona Avenue appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse.

Her pleaded guilty to one charge of being drunk in a public place on Wellington Street in Douglas on 15 October.

Prosecution advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the hearing the 19-year-old contacted the mental health crisis team at around 6.15pm that evening, sparking concern for his well-being.

Police were asked to look for Briggs but discovered he wasn't at his home address.

The court heard they contacted him on his mobile but he repeatedly told officers he was in different places before they finally found him on Prospect Hill.

However Briggs ran off before being detained a short time later.

Magistrates admonished Briggs as he smirked in the dock and told him he was lucky not to have been charged with wasting police time.

He was fined £100 and ordered to pay £125 towards prosecution costs.
