Teaching union calls for Covid testing in schools

NASUWT seeks more mitigations ahead of January reopening

Covid-19 testing in school, a staggered return after the Christmas holidays and more ventilation.

Those are some of the measures a teaching union is calling for in the Island's schools when students return to the classroom after the festive break.

Years 11, 12 and 13 at Ballakermeen High School are being asked to stay at home today and tomorrow because of staff shortages caused by illness.

Damien McNulty from the NASUWT union, which has written to Education Minister Julie Edge, says these mitigations would help keep classrooms full:

In a statement to Manx Radio, the Department of Education, Sport and Culture says: 'Making educational settings as safe as possible for our staff and students and maintaining face-to-face learning is our top priority.

'As such all schools and University College Isle of Man retain proportionate mitigations measures.

'We continue to monitor and review all measures in place and will align to any change to Government Policy or Public Health advice as it arises.'
