Teachers' union asks candidates to take 'education pledge'

NAHT publishes its own manifesto

A teachers' union has called on general election candidates to pledge support for the Island's education system.

The Isle of Man NAHT has published its own manifesto which it hopes would-be MHK's will support.

The National Association of Head Teachers asks, firstly, that candidates agree to meet the needs of the Island's children.

It's also calling for a renewed focus on the wellbeing of teachers in leadership roles.

The union says, in its view, the Isle of Man continues to suffer from being hugely underfunded in terms of education provision.

And it, whilst highlighting an issue which has dominated headlines over the past two years, says teachers need to be 'properly rewarded' by government to ensure retention of staff.

The Isle of Man General Election will take place on Thursday, 23 September.

A series of NAHT hustings – where people can hear candidates' views on education - are due to take place as follows:

• Onchan: Monday, 13 September - 7pm - 8.30pm
• Arbory, Castletown and Malew: Tuesday, 14 September - 5pm - 6.30pm
• Douglas East: Wednesday, 15 September - 7pm - 8.30pm
