Teachers' pay deal is 'real terms pay cut' says NEU

Education union one of three to accept DESC terms

One teaching union to accept a government pay deal says it's been clear with its members that it is, in real terms, a pay cut.

The NEU is one of the three unions to agree to the terms from the Department of Education, Sport and Culture.

So far just the NASUWT, which represents the largest number of teachers on the Island, has rejected the offer - its members go on strike next week.

The NEU's committee says it welcomes the collaborative approach to working conditions and pay that is becoming established between ourselves and the DESC.

It asks, however, that given current inflation rates, the losses taken on this year are taken into consideration when the two parties begin negotiations for the next financial year.

Seventy-seven-per-cent of NEU members who responded to a survey agreed to the pay deal.
