Suspended sentence for man who kicked through bathroom door to get to ex

27-year-old admits domestic abuse

A Peel man who kicked his way through a bathroom door to get to his ex-partner has avoided jail.

Jack Edwards, of Corrins Way, was sentenced at Douglas Courthouse after admitting domestic abuse.

Between 21 March and 21 June the 27-year-old was verbally abusive, and physically destructive, in the property he shared with her and their two children.

The woman told police she believed he was going to kill her adding on one occasion he’d held his hand over her mouth to try and stop her breathing; an allegation disputed by Edwards’ advocate.

But he told the court: “He (Edwards) accepts there is no excuse for his behaviour.”

Sentencing Edwards to 13 weeks custody, suspended for 18 months, Magistrates told him they were mindful of the ‘potential damage’ on the children’s wellbeing from his conduct.

“Domestic violence is a serious offence,” they added: “It is simply not acceptable.”

An 18-month probation order will run alongside the suspended sentence for other driving offences which Edwards pleaded guilty to.

He’s also been disqualified from driving for two years, and until he’s taken and passed an extended driving test, and must pay £900 in prosecution costs.
