Suspended sentence for former footballer

Former Scottish international footballer Frank McAvennie has been given a four-month suspended jail sentence for fighting outside an Island pub.

The 48 year-old from Newcastle head-butted a man outside the Aperitivo wine bar in Douglas in July last year.

McAvennie (pictured) was in the Island for an exhibition football match and was unable to play following his arrest.

A second charge of disorderly behaviour on licensed premises was dropped.

High Bailiff Michael Moyle sentenced McAvennie to four months in prison, suspended for a period of two years, and ordered him to pay court costs of £113.
