Surveillance cameras 'must be justified'

 

The Island's data protection supervisor is calling on Island businesses to think carefully before installing surveillance equipment which captures images of the public.

Iain McDonald says the key question is - what will it achieve?

The advice comes after a high-profile case in the UK where the Information Commissioner's office won a case against Hertfordshire police over the use of automatic number plate recognition cameras.

Mr McDonald says the use of cameras must be justified, as more cases brought by people claiming a breach of civil liberties are being upheld in the UK and Isle of Man.

He says anyone wishing to install surveillance systems should follow guidelines and carry out an impact assessment:
