Speaker uncertain over health deficit

Calls for conversation between govt and public

An MHK admits he's skeptical about the likelihood of reducing a recurring deficit in the health department.

Juan Watterson leads Tynwald's Public Accounts Committee, which this week published a far-reaching report on overspending at Noble's Hospital.

The DHSC has gone more than £30 million over budget in the last three years - among the recommendations to stem it are that no new services are taken on until spending can be brought under control.

Mr Watterson is calling for 'a conversation' between government and the public about what services are expected in future, and what should be expected to pay for it.

He says previous attempts to balance the books have failed.
