SPC policy could stop off-Island school trips says education minister

DESC claims it wasn't aware of planned changes

Manx students may not be able to participate in trips off-Island if the Steam Packet's adult-to-child ratio for group bookings stays the same, according to the education minister.

In October, the ferry operator introduced a new policy requiring one adult to be booked on any vessel for every five children.

But Daphne Caine says the policy isn't in line with theirs, or that of the UK's Department of Education.

She says it could put school trips off-Island at risk:

The Steam Packet Company has responded with a statement.

It says: "The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is heavily invested in, and committed to, supporting the economic, cultural and social growth of the Isle of Man.

"We work hard to build relationships and develop opportunities.

"Our Kids Go Free offer and 10% reduction in Flexi Fare prices announced in October 2024 are specifically designed to help stimulate additional use of our services to support, among others, the visitor economy and contribute to the Island's broader development.

"We are always open to discussion with businesses regarding opportunities for growth.

"While we fully understand and appreciate the concerns of politicians, the public and business owners regarding economic and social impacts of our policy decisions, our first priority is always to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers, crew and vessels at all times.

"We can’t compromise on this.

"Our team work extremely hard to maintain our enviable safety record."
