On the eve of the eighth anniversary of the Solway Harvester tragedy, it’s been revealed there could soon be a breakthrough in a bid to obtain evidence from the vessel’s owner.
The inquest into the sinking was adjourned a year ago when south-west Scotland businessman Richard Gidney refused to attend on the grounds it may prejudice any civil action against him.
However, the Scottish High Court is now considering an application from the Manx authorities which would force Mr Gidney to give evidence.
A legal firm in Scotland had been instructed by the Island’s coroner to see if the evidence could be given on commission.
The families of the seven crew, who lost their lives on board the Solway Harvester, are likely to launch civil action against Mr Gidney but have put such a move on hold until the inquest is concluded.
