Shoppers urged to switch to reusable bags

Environmentalists in the Isle of Man are appealing to shoppers to stop using plastic bags.

The Island will be taking part in the first 'No Plastic Bags Day' tomorrow, the aim of which is to make people to think much harder about alternative ways to carry their shopping home.

Millions of bags a year are imported into the Island, and to mark the global initiative members of the pressure group Zero Waste Mann will be at the Strand Shopping Centre in Douglas, handing out Morsbags as an environmentally friendly alternative.

Marine Conservation Officer for the Manx government Dr Fiona Gell says plastic bags are a major choking hazard for creatures in and around the sea, and she is full behind the Marine Conservation Society initiative:
