Safety recommendations implemented
The owner of a Manx-registered ship has responded to an investigation into the deaths of two crew members.
The chief officer and chief engineer died on board the Carisbrooke Shipping-owned bulk carrier Sally Ann C as it carried timber from the Ivory Coast to Senegal in March this year.
The report, by the Isle of Man Ship Registry, says the company failed to record all its enclosed spaces, hadn’t properly recorded a safety drill three months earlier and had no procedures about timber or the dangers of oxygen depletion in cargo holds.
A statement from the shipping company says it welcomes and accepts the findings of the investigation and has implemented recommendations.
It also highlights the report noting Carisbrooke Shipping took extensive steps to warn seafarers about the dangers of working in enclosed spaces without appropriate safety equipment.
The statement adds a second officer, who passed out in the hold during attempts to rescue his shipmates, is at home with his family and is making steady progress in his recovery.
