Annual rescue figures published for Isle of Man crews

The RNLI has released its annual rescue figures, showing crews on the Isle of Man were called out 40 times last year.

That's an increase on 2023, during which lifeboats were launched 31 times.

During last year's callouts four lives were saved - double the figure from 2023.

The number of people aided rose from 27 in 2023 to 53 in 2024.

Douglas and Port St Mary lifeboats had the most launches, while each of the Island’s lifeboat stations saw an increase in callouts on the previous year.

The volunteer crew at Port Erin were responsible for saving three lives last year.

In total, more than 75 percent of the callouts last year were within five nautical miles or less of the shore, and the majority involved involved power boats, sailing vessels or manual watercraft – such as paddleboards and kayaks.

The charity says demand for its lifesaving service remains high, and it's therefore putting out its own 'Mayday' call to drive for further funding. In 2023, it cost over £190m to run the RNLI.

Now, the institution is urging the public to get involved with its biggest national fundraising event, the 'Mayday Mile'.

Participants are challenged to cover a mile a day throughout the month of May.
