RNLI is 190 years old

 

190 years today (Thursday) Sir William Hillary appealed for a service dedicated to saving lives at sea.

Today that service is known as the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and operates 444 lifeboats around Great Britain, Ireland, the Channel Islands and on the Isle of Man.

Sir Hillary was inspired to make his appeal after witnessing the destruction of dozens of ships from his home on Fort Anne Road in Douglas.

President of the fundraising team at Douglas lifeboat station, Peter Cain, says the service wouldn't be possible without the public's generosity:
