Restraining order for former soldier who assaulted ex-partner

33-year-old grabbed woman by the throat

A former soldier from Peel has been handed a 12-month restraining order after grabbing his ex-girlfriend by the throat.

Michael Hussain Baker, of Ballagyr Lane, admitted common assault during an appearance at Douglas Courthouse.

Police were called to the 33-year-old’s home address on Monday (17 October) after reports of an ongoing disturbance.

The court heard the couple had split up but were still living together due to their rental commitment.

Baker’s ex-partner told officers she’d been in the garden when he became ‘verbally aggressive’ towards her and proceeded to push her over.

When she refused to leave the property Baker squeezed her neck leaving her struggling to breathe.

In interview Baker said he’d lost his temper but claimed the woman had lunged at him and he was acting in self-defence.

A probation worker who had assessed Baker told magistrates the relationship had been, on the whole, ‘good and positive’ adding: “He is deeply ashamed he is before you today.”

Magistrates also imposed a six-month probation order and ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £125.
