Respects paid to Hector Duff

Onchan streets lined with people applauding

A service of thanksgiving to celebrate the life of Normandy veteran Hector Duff has taken place at St. Peters Church in Onchan.

Many tributes have been paid to the 101 year-old since he died at the end of November.

People lined the streets and applauded as the cortege made its way through the village.

Outside the church, police officers and members of the British Legion formed a guard of honour.

The Lieutenant Governor Sir Richard Gozney and Chief Minister Howard Quayle were amongst a packed congregation.

The coffin was carried in to the Manx Fisherman's Evening Hymn.

The service was led by the Reverend Alessandra Di Chiara with the Archdeacon, the Venerable Andie Brown and the Lord Bishop Peter Eagles also involved.

The two hymns sung were "Guide me, O thou great redeemer" and "The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended".

The eulogy was delivered by former governor Sir Laurence New, on behalf of the family.

Before the prayer of commendation and blessing, the Last Post was played followed by a silence and the Reveille.

Chief Constable Gary Roberts called it a moving occasion:-

Also involved in the service was Major Charles Wilson:-
