Removal of farming subsidies could 'double price of food'

Manx NFU President defends payments

Government subsidies to farmers help to keep food affordable to consumers.

That's the view of the President of the Manx National Farmers' Union.

Brian Brumby was speaking on Sunday Opinion ahead of a Tynwald debate on additional drought aid for farmers who've been affected by this summer's dry weather.

Mr Brumby says recent figures suggest Manx consumers spend 8% of the average income on food today, compared to around 40% fifty years ago.
