Heritage railway fares report received

Advance purchase discount on passes

A select committee report on charging pensioners for train and tram travel has been received by Tynwald.

Addressing the Court as he moved the report, chairman of the committee Bill Shimmins MHK, said the Island's heritage railway networks were for leisure, and were not a necessity.

He said they continued to lose millions per year, despite passenger numbers increasing.

Three amendments were put forward.

David Cretney MLC wanted pensioners to get free off-peak travel, while Garff MHK Daphne Caine asked for pensioners living near to the Manx Electric Railway (who weren't served by a regular bus service) to be entitled to a free MER pass.

She did not want the advance purchase discounts on annual passes for the steam railway and the MER to be offered by the Department of Infrastructure, as proposed by the select committee.

The third amendment came from East Douglas MHK Clare Bettison, who merely wanted the report to be received, with no further action for now.

Mr Shimmins welcomed this.

Miss Bettison's amendment was the only one to be carried.

Members voted unanimously in favour (24 votes) in the House of Keys, and five for and two against in the Legislative Council.
