CM outlines drivers for economic growth

Key principle nailed in programme for govt

A range of measures to encourage economic growth have been outlined by the chief minister.

Howard Quayle's framework of government principles produced by the Council of Ministers, includes changes to the work permit system, reforms to the planning system and a new education strategy.

Freedom of information will also be rolled out across all government departments next year - 12 months ahead of schedule.

Mr Quayle told Tynwald today that many politicians felt the planning system was not responsive enough.

He vowed to expand the range of work permit exemptions, responding to skills shortages that he said were "hindering business expansion" in the Island.

The chief minister also highlighted inconsistent pre-school provision across the Island, which needed an urgent overhaul.

A debate on the principles and objectives for a programme for government will continue in Tynwald this afternoon (15 Oct).
